Facts

Missouri ironweed has been collected in Massachusetts, but is native to the prairies of the midwest south to Texas and Georgia. The Kiowa used this species to weave rugs, mats and mattresses, to make a purple die from the flowers, as a wash to cure dandruff, and they chewed the flowers for candy.

abaxial surface of leaf blades +/- glabrous and conspicuously punctate and capitula with mostly 12–25 flowers (vs. V. missurica, with abaxial surface of leaf blades thinly to densely tomentose, the pubescence usually concealing the puncta, and capitula with mostly 32–55 flowers).
